Three taps rebuild the shortlist: what kind of paddle you want, how much time you have, and your budget per person. The picker draws on all 14 tours on the page, and the five kinds break down like this.

  • Rangitoto Island: 2 tours, the Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto and the Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto, both 6 hours 30 minutes and both from $139.16 per person.
  • Volcano paddles: 2 tours, the Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle and the Browns Island Volcano Kayak.
  • Night and bioluminescence: 3 tours, from the Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours at $64.03 to the City Lights Night Paddle at $82.36.
  • Harbour and pub paddles: 4 tours, covering the city waterfront, a brewery, a tavern and a Clevedon brewery day.
  • Island and marine reserve:3 tours, one of them the Clearyak rental at Goat Island at $72.13 per double kayak.

Set the time filter anywhere from a 30-minute hire to a two-day camping trip, and the budget filter anywhere from $62.48 to $1,008.18 per person. Each combination narrows the same 14 tours, so nothing appears in the shortlist that is not bookable on this page.

Once the picker gives you a shortlist, a few hard numbers cut it down further.

A guide's hands adjusting a plain lifejacket buckle on a paddler shown from the shoulders down, blurred sandy beach and kayak behind.

Minimum Ages

Both Rangitoto tours set the minimum at 14. The Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle and the City Lights Night Paddle set it at 12, the Tiritiri Matangi day trip at 13, and the Coastal Brewery Kayak at 11. The Clearyak hire at Goat Island takes children from 3, and those under 12 ride with an adult. The Social Nature Movement booking pages state no minimum age.

Weight Limits

Auckland Sea Kayaks asks for 120 kg or less and the ability to fit a seat about 65 cm wide. Clearyak sets 100 kg per person at Goat Island. The other booking pages state no weight figure.

Time And Budget

Durations run from the 30 or 60 minute Goat Island hire to the two-day Waiheke trip with camping. Per-person from-prices run from $62.48 to $1,008.18, with a median of $83.80 across the 13 per-person tours. The $72.13 Goat Island hire is per double kayak, up to two people, so it is not the cheapest tour per person.

Check the meeting point next: distances between launch points range from the city marina to a beach about 1.5 hours' drive north of Auckland.

How Do Auckland Kayak Tours Run, From The Boat Ramp To The Island Landing?

Sea kayaks paddling away from the St Heliers slipway across the Hauraki Gulf, with Rangitoto's low scoria cone on the horizon.

Every guided Rangitoto paddle starts at the water, not on it. Auckland Sea Kayaks asks paddlers to arrive at the St Heliers Bay boat ramp about 10 minutes before the tour. If you would rather not drive, the operator runs a free shuttle from the Auckland War Memorial Museum atrium on its three St Heliers tours. It departs 30 minutes before the tour, must be pre-booked and has limited seats. No tour offers a pickup from your accommodation.

On The Water

After a safety briefing you head out in double sea kayaks with a guide. Lifejackets are compulsory on craft of 6 m or less, kayaks included, under the rule that took effect on 9 October 2026. For how long you paddle each way to the island, see the water-versus-land table below, which shows the operator's stated minutes for each tour.

Landing On A Pest-Free Island

Rangitoto is pest-free, and landing rules apply to every visitor: check gear for rodents, insects, ants and skinks, clean footwear and gear of soil and seeds, and close bags, with food in sealed containers. Rangers may recheck gear on arrival. The operator holds a Pest-free Warrant for commercial trips.

Narrow dark scoria path between lava rock and low pohutukawa scrub on Rangitoto's slope, hazy sea far below, walking shoes visible.

The Summit Walk

Both Auckland Sea Kayaks Rangitoto tours include a 7 km return walk to the summit. DOC grades it easy to intermediate, about 2 hours, with roughly 250 m of climbing over rough, uneven volcanic ground with loose gravel and little shade. Sturdy shoes and sun protection matter; heat off the lava is intense.

Food And The Paddle Home

The Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto and the Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto are catered with a BBQ dinner or BBQ lunch plus a hot drink. On the sunset paddle the return leg finishes at St Heliers after dark, with navigation lights on every kayak.

The table above splits each tour into three numbers: total time, time on the water and time on land. Read them together and the shape of each day becomes clear.

Where Most Of The Day Goes

The two Rangitoto tours run 6 hours 30 minutes in total, and the water-versus-land split explains why. Auckland Sea Kayaks puts the crossing at around an hour and a half on the water each way, while the 7 km return summit walk, the lava cave visit and a catered BBQ meal fill the hours ashore. The Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle involves up to 45 minutes of continuous paddling and a guided walk of about 1.5 km to the summit.

Mostly-Water Tours

The short evening and pub paddles sit at the other end. The Coastal Brewery Kayak spends about 1.5 of its 2 hours on the water, roughly 2 km one way, and ends near a Browns Bay brewery, with food and drinks not included. The Riverhead Tavern Paddle gives you 1 hour on the Waitemata Harbour inside its 2 hours.

Gaps In The Table

Some cells say the minutes are not stated. That is all the booking pages give, so treat those rows as a total-time figure only.

The Rental Row

The Goat Island row is a rental, not a guided day: the whole 30 or 60 minutes is yours on the water, launched from the beach at the reserve, with no guide and no land program.

Plain hire kayaks in a short row on a pale empty sandy beach, low rocky reef offshore, pohutukawa on the headland beyond.

Weather Decides

Wind and sea conditions decide the day. Auckland Sea Kayaks operates within strict wind and sea limits and may move you to a sheltered tour such as City Lights or City Scenes, reschedule, or refund in full if no alternative is possible.

Auckland Kayak Tours To Rangitoto Island, By Day And At Sunset

2 tours, from $139.16 per person

All 2 Rangitoto Island Kayak Tours on one page →

Rangitoto Island Kayak Tours covers two guided paddles, both run by Auckland Sea Kayaks from the St Heliers Bay boat ramp at 384 Tamaki Drive, and both priced at $139.16 per person. The "Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto" holds a 4.9 rating across 179 reviews; the "Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto" also rates 4.9, across 83 reviews. Each runs for 6 hours 30 minutes and is built around the same shape: a guided paddle to the island, then the 7 km return summit walk, with about 250 m of climbing on rough volcanic ground and little shade, plus a lava cave visit.

The catering differs. The sunset paddle includes a BBQ dinner and a hot drink, with coffee or tea. The daytime paddle serves a BBQ lunch instead. Both tours supply double sea kayaks, top quality sea kayak equipment and experienced guides, and both describe themselves as suitable for people with little or no kayaking experience. Groups are capped at 8.

Entry rules are the same on each booking page: minimum age 14, weight limit 120 kg, and riders need to fit a seat about 65 cm wide and stay seated up to 45 minutes at a time. Alcohol is not permitted.

Black volcanic boulders with lichen patches along a Rangitoto shoreline, small waves washing between them, a kayak bow entering the corner.

Rangitoto itself emerged from the sea about 600 years ago, making it New Zealand's youngest volcano, and it can be reached only by ferry, boat or kayak. The island is pest-free and carries the world's largest pohutukawa forest. It sits within a Hauraki Gulf High Protection Area, where kayaking is allowed but fishing and taking seafood are not.

The two Rangitoto tours differ mainly in timing and catering. The "Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto" is the featured trip: 6 hours 30 minutes, from $139.16 per person, rated 4.9 across 179 reviews, with a BBQ dinner and a hot drink, a summit walk, and a return to St Heliers after dark with navigation lights on every kayak. The "Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto" matches it on price, duration and rating at 4.9 across 83 reviews, but swaps in a BBQ lunch and provides head torches for the lava cave visit.

Both paddles launch from the St Heliers Bay boat ramp, with free parking around St Heliers subject to time limits outside the shops, and both ask paddlers to arrive 10 minutes early. Auckland Sea Kayaks also runs a pre-booked free shuttle from the Auckland War Memorial Museum atrium, departing 30 minutes before the tour, with limited seats and no hotel pick-ups of any kind.

Rangitoto's low cone under heavy cloud with rain squalls over the Hauraki Gulf, seen across grey water from an empty beach.

On cancellation, both booking pages state free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, but the operator's own terms differ: client cancellations more than 48 hours before departure get a refund less a 25 percent admin fee, and within 48 hours there is no refund. If the operator cancels for weather, the terms allow a full refund or reschedule, and the operator may offer a transfer to a sheltered tour such as City Lights or City Scenes instead.

The practical decision point is simple: dinner and a paddle home in the dark, or lunch and a daylight return.

Volcano Island Paddles To Motukorea / Browns Island

2 tours, from $83.80 per person

All 2 Volcano Island Paddles on one page →

Motukorea, also called Browns Island, is a volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf with no public ferry. The Volcano Island Paddles group holds 2 tours, with per-person from-prices from $83.80 to $110.76, and both are guided.

The "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle" is run by Auckland Sea Kayaks and costs $110.76 per person. It runs 4 hours, carries a 5.0 rating across 38 reviews, and launches from the St Heliers Bay boat ramp at 384 Tamaki Drive. A guide, top quality sea kayak equipment and a double kayak are included, along with fresh morning tea, refreshments, coffee or tea. The itinerary includes a guided summit walk of about 1.5 km with roughly 70 m of climbing, and the paddle involves up to 45 minutes of continuous kayaking before landing. Minimum age is 12, the weight limit is 120 kg, and groups are capped at 8. A free shuttle from the Auckland War Memorial Museum atrium, departing 30 minutes before the tour, can be pre-booked, with limited seats; there are no hotel pickups.

The "Browns Island Volcano Kayak" costs $83.80 per person, runs 4 hours and holds a 5.0 rating across 22 reviews. A professional guide, kayak, paddle, equipment and a personal flotation device are included, with a maximum group size of 16. Minimum age and weight limits are not stated. It meets at St Heliers Bay Boat Ramp, 384 Tamaki Drive, 45 minutes before the start time, and transport is not included: an optional paid add-on bus, named the Browns bus, is offered.

Motukorea is one of the best-preserved volcanoes in the Auckland volcanic field.

How The Two Volcano Paddles Differ

Both tours run 4 hours and both meet on Tamaki Drive at St Heliers, but the gap in price is real: $83.80 per person for the "Browns Island Volcano Kayak" against $110.76 for the "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle". Part of what the Auckland Sea Kayaks tour adds is stated plainly in its inclusions: fresh morning tea and refreshments, small groups capped at 8, and a guided walk of about 1.5 km to the summit with around 70 m of climbing. The Social Nature Movement tour does not state a summit walk, food, minimum age or weight limit, and runs with up to 16 people.

Empty seawall promenade at St Heliers Bay in morning light, big pohutukawa trees, benches, calm water, a distant jogger from behind.

Getting there differs too. The Auckland Sea Kayaks paddle offers a pre-booked free shuttle from the Auckland War Memorial Museum atrium, departing 30 minutes before the tour with limited seats. The Social Nature Movement tour includes no transport, though the paid add-on Browns bus exists, and asks paddlers to meet 45 minutes early.

On cancellation, the two tours here differ. Both state free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, with the operator's own terms stricter on the Auckland Sea Kayaks paddle. For the "Browns Island Volcano Kayak", cancellation terms are not stated, so read the booking page before paying. Both are rated 5.0, on 38 reviews and 22 reviews respectively.

Night And Bioluminescence Kayaking On The Waitemata And North Shore

Sea kayaks sliding off a concrete slipway into calm dark water at dusk, paddlers wearing headlamps and red safety lights glowing in the distance.
3 tours, from $64.03 per person

All 3 Night And Bioluminescence Kayaking on one page →

Night kayaking around Auckland splits into two kinds of evening on the water: paddles that go looking for bioluminescence, and paddles that stay under the city lights. This section holds three guided tours, with per-person from-prices from $64.03 to $82.36, and each one is guided with kayak and safety gear included.

The Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours runs 1.5 to 2 hours from $64.03 per person and carries a 4.9 rating across 327 reviews, the most-reviewed tour on this page. A guide, kayak and equipment, a personal flotation device and a safety light beacon are included; toilets are not. The meeting point is chosen at booking, and transport is an optional paid add-on at checkout, named the Bio bus. Groups are capped at 16.

Dusk at an Auckland waterfront marina, yacht masts and warm city lights reflected on dark still water seen from low kayak height.

The Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak from Canoe & Kayak Adventures costs from $67.59 per person, runs 2 hours and is rated 4.1 across 206 reviews. Kayaking and safety equipment, tuition and a one-to-six guide-to-guest ratio are included; gratuities are not. The exact start point is emailed before 10 AM on the tour day, and groups run up to 24 people. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on the booking page.

The City Lights Night Paddle from Auckland Sea Kayaks is the city option: 2.5 hours in double kayaks from $82.36 per person, rated 4.8 across 28 reviews, launching from Westhaven Marina Z Pier at 79 Westhaven Drive. A light snack is included, dinner is not. Minimum age is 12, the weight limit is 120 kg and groups max out at 8. This is a city-lights paddle, not a bioluminescence tour.

On the glow itself, be clear-eyed: no operator promises a glow, and kayaking is a wet sport.

Plain sea kayaks on sand at blue hour, faint warm headlamp glow from a distant figure at the water's edge, pohutukawa silhouettes.

The three tours divide along duration, group size and what you paddle toward. The Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours is the shortest at 1.5 to 2 hours and the cheapest at $64.03 per person, with groups capped at 16. The Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak is 2 hours at $67.59 and takes the largest groups, up to 24, with a stated guide-to-guest ratio of one to six. The City Lights Night Paddle is the longest and most expensive of the three: 2.5 hours at $82.36, in double kayaks, with the smallest cap at 8 people and a light snack included.

Start points differ sharply. The City Lights Night Paddle has a fixed address, the Z Pier boat ramp at Westhaven Marina, with paid parking at the marina. The Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak emails the exact meeting point before 10 AM on the tour day, so read that email before setting out. The Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours has you choose a meeting point at booking, and meet 1 hour before the start time if you take the optional Bio bus, which is a paid add-on, not part of the base price.

On cancellation, all three tours state free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start on the booking page, though the City Lights paddle carries Auckland Sea Kayaks' own stricter terms.

Auckland Kayak Tours To The Pub, The Brewery And The City Waterfront

Sea kayaks paddling along the pontoon line at Westhaven Marina between yacht masts, the city skyline soft across the harbour.
4 tours, from $62.48 per person

All 4 Harbour, City And Pub Paddles on one page →

Four paddles make up this group, every one of them new on the booking platform: priced and live, but without a single review or rating so far. The from-prices run from $62.48 to $113.60, and all four are guided.

The cheapest is the "Riverhead Tavern Paddle" at $62.48 per person, a 2-hour guided trip with Social Nature Movement, launching from Christmas Beach on Herald Island. Life jacket, kayak and paddle are included.

The "Coastal Brewery Kayak" from Canoe & Kayak Adventures costs $67.59 per person for 2 hours. It meets in front of the Browns Bay Boating Club, includes all kayaking and safety equipment, stable sea kayaks or sit-on-top kayaks, full instruction and guidance from experienced, qualified kayak guides, and a complimentary shuttle service. It ends near Browns Bay Brewing Company, though meals and restaurant bookings there are not included.

Sea kayaks on pale sand beside a low weatherboard boating club, empty outdoor tables on the deck, pohutukawa overhead, calm evening water.

The "City Scenes Waterfront Paddle" from Auckland Sea Kayaks is $82.36 per person for 2 hours 30 minutes, launching from Westhaven Marina's Z Pier boat ramp in double kayaks, with snacks included. Minimum age 12, weight limit 120 kg, group size capped at 9.

The longest and dearest option is "Hallertau Clevedon, 4 to 5 Hours" at $113.60 per person with Social Nature Movement. You meet at Hallertau Clevedon brewery and the operator shuttles you to Mataitai Bay Beach in Waitawa Regional Park, with life jacket, kayak and paddle included. The itinerary includes 2 hours at the brewery; a tasting is not stated as included.

Two kayak paddles leaning against a wooden rack on pale sand, wet footprints leading to the water, boating club deck blurred behind.

Time on the water is the first difference. The "Riverhead Tavern Paddle" and the "Coastal Brewery Kayak" are both 2 hours; the "City Scenes Waterfront Paddle" runs 2 hours 30 minutes; "Hallertau Clevedon, 4 to 5 Hours" is the long day out.

The start points sit on opposite sides of the region. Christmas Beach on Herald Island for the Riverhead trip, Browns Bay on the North Shore for the brewery paddle, Westhaven Marina's Z Pier for the city waterfront paddle, and the Hallertau Clevedon brewery for the Clevedon trip, from where the operator shuttles you to Mataitai Bay Beach. Paid parking applies at Westhaven Marina; the brewery paddle includes a complimentary shuttle.

Cancellation terms split by operator. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start appears on the booking pages for the "Riverhead Tavern Paddle", the "Coastal Brewery Kayak" and "Hallertau Clevedon, 4 to 5 Hours". The "City Scenes Waterfront Paddle" carries free cancellation up to 24 hours on the booking page, with the operator's own terms differing; read the booking page before booking. If Auckland Sea Kayaks cancels for weather, its terms allow a full refund or a reschedule.

Group sizes also vary: 9 on the city paddle, 16 on both Social Nature Movement trips, 24 on the brewery paddle. None of the four has a review yet, so price, duration and distance from where you are staying carry more weight than ratings here.

Island And Marine Reserve Kayaks: Tiritiri Matangi, Waiheke And Goat Island

Sea kayaks drifting over clear green water above a sandstone reef at Goat Island, paddlers seen from behind.
3 tours, from $150.52 per person

All 3 Island And Marine Reserve Kayaks on one page →

Three tours make up the Island And Marine Reserve Kayaks group, with per-person prices from $150.52 to $1,008.18, plus one rental priced per double kayak. Two are guided trips run by established operators; the third is an unguided rental at Goat Island.

The "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours" tour from Canoe & Kayak Adventures costs from $150.52 per person and has 3 reviews so far. It runs 6 to 7 hours, launches from Army Bay Beach at 1468 Whangaparaoa Road, and takes a group of up to 16 in stable double sea kayaks with all kayaking and safety equipment, tuition and qualified guides included. Minimum age is 13. Lunch and private transportation are not included. The Department of Conservation describes the stretch of water between the island and the mainland as one that can get rough and windy, and calls an independent crossing an intermediate trip, not for beginners.

A sea kayak drifting off a bush-covered island, pohutukawa and flax above, clear shallow water over rocks, paddler seen from behind.

The "2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak" trip from Social Nature Movement costs from $1,008.18 per person and is new on the booking platform with no reviews yet. It runs two days from Maraetai Public Boat Ramp, with dinner, a life jacket, kayak and paddle, and luxury camping accommodation included, in a group of up to 16. There is no Waiheke day paddle among the tours compared here.

At Goat Island Road, Leigh, Clearyak NZ rents out clear-bottom double kayaks, $72.13 apiece for a pair, with a 4.8 rating from 84 reviews; renters paddle themselves, no guide, for 30 or 60 minutes. It needs no kayaking or swimming experience. Clearyak runs in the warmer season only, so check the operator website before you drive up. Goat Island is New Zealand's first marine reserve, established in 1975, with no fishing or taking of marine life.

A small timber jetty below a bush-covered slope, one sea kayak on the stony beach beside it, still morning water.

The three options serve different plans. "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours" is a one-day guided paddle at from $150.52 per person, the dearest single-day paddle in the comparison, covering 6 to 7 hours with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. "2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak" is the only overnight trip on the whole page at from $1,008.18 per person, two days with camping and dinner included, also with free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes" is the page's only unguided product: $72.13 covers a double clear-bottom kayak for up to two people for 30 or 60 minutes, with all equipment provided and free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and it carries a 4.8 rating across 84 reviews. Minimum ages differ sharply: 13 on the Tiritiri Matangi trip, age 3 on the rental, with children under 12 in the kayak with an adult.

Kelp fronds and dark rocks seen through clear shallow water, a kayak hull edge at one corner, sunlight rippling on the seabed.

Start points are spread widely. The Tiritiri Matangi tour meets at Army Bay Beach, Whangaparaoa. The Waiheke trip meets at Maraetai Public Boat Ramp. The rental meets at 150 Goat Island Road, Leigh, roughly 1.5 hours north of Auckland, and DOC has reported the upper car parks there closing for repair, with paid parking planned from December 2026. Clearyak runs in the warmer season only, peaking December to February; check the operator website before you drive up.

The main decision point is guided versus unguided: two guided trips with guides, gear and tuition, or one rental where you paddle the marine reserve on your own.

Where Do Auckland Kayak Tours Launch, From St Heliers To Goat Island?

Sea kayaks rest on sand above the tideline at St Heliers Bay, pohutukawa trees leaning over calm grey-green water behind them.

It departs 30 minutes before the tour, must be pre-booked and has limited seats, and no hotel pickups are offered. On the two Social Nature Movement night and Browns Island tours, transport is an optional paid add-on bus at checkout, with a meet time before the tour start. The Coastal Brewery Kayak includes a complimentary shuttle. For the Clevedon day, meet at the brewery and the operator shuttles you to Mataitai Bay Beach in Waitawa Regional Park.

Driving To Goat Island

The Clearyak hire point on Goat Island Road, Leigh is about 1.5 hours' drive north of Auckland. DOC reported the upper car parks closing for repair, with the main car park and lower overflow staying open, so park and walk down the hill. Paid parking is planned from December 2026, and the tariff is not stated. Before driving up, check the operator website: Clearyak runs in the warmer season only.

Getting Around Without A Car

The museum shuttle, the add-on buses and the complimentary brewery shuttle cover the main starts. Every other tour meets at its start point.

Off the scale: Clearyak Rental, 30 Or 60 Minutes, $72.13 per group of up to 2; 2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak, $1,008.18 per person.

Every price on this page is a from-price taken from the booking page, quoted per person in US dollars unless a line says otherwise. A from-price is the starting price shown on the booking page; the optional paid bus on the Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours is an add-on at checkout and is not part of it.

The Range And The Middle

Across the 13 per-person tours, from-prices run from $62.48 to $1,008.18, with a median of $83.80. The span is wide because the cheapest is a two-hour guided paddle to the Riverhead Tavern, while the highest is the two-day Waiheke Island trip.

By Category

  • Rangitoto Island:both tours at $139.16.
  • Volcano island paddles: $83.80 to $110.76.
  • Night and bioluminescence: $64.03 to $82.36.
  • Harbour, city and pub paddles: $62.48 to $113.60.
  • Island and marine reserve: $150.52 to $1,008.18.

The Floor And The Flagships

The cheapest tour per person is the Riverhead Tavern Paddle at $62.48, a new booking page with no reviews yet. The cheapest tour with a review history is the Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours at $64.03, rated 4.9 across 327 reviews. The two featured Rangitoto paddles, the Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto and the Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto, both cost $139.16 with a catered BBQ meal included.

The Odd One Out

The Clearyak rental at Goat Island is priced at $72.13 per double kayak, up to two people, so it is not the cheapest tour per person on the page.

What The Clusters Show

The night paddles cluster between $64.03 and $82.36 for tours of 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The pub and brewery paddles sit between $62.48 and $113.60, with food and drinks not included on the Coastal Brewery Kayak. The two Rangitoto paddles both cost $139.16, and both include a catered BBQ meal plus a hot drink, which explains part of the step up from the shorter paddles. The Tiritiri Matangi day trip costs $150.52 for a 6 to 7 hour day, with lunch and private transport not included. At the top, the 2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak costs $1,008.18 as an overnight trip with dinner and luxury camping accommodation included.

Cancellation Terms

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on all 14 tours. The five Auckland Sea Kayaks tours carry that 24-hour term on the booking page, with the operator's own terms differing: more than 48 hours before departure brings a refund less a 25 percent admin fee, and inside 48 hours or a no-show brings no refund. If the operator cancels for weather, its terms give a full refund or a reschedule.

Price Is Not Quality

A higher price does not mean a better paddle. The highest-rated tours with 20 or more reviews include the $110.76 Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle and the $83.80 Browns Island Volcano Kayak, both rated 5.0. Read each tour's inclusions against its price, then decide.

Age, Weight And Experience Rules For Auckland Kayak Tours

Paddlers in lifejackets stand in a half circle on grass, seen from behind, listening to a gesturing guide, kayaks on sand beyond.

The rules below come from the operator pages and the booking pages for each tour, and they differ by tour rather than by company. A rule printed for one paddle does not carry to the next.

Auckland Sea Kayaks

The minimum age is 14 on both the "Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto" and the "Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto", and 12 on the "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle", the "City Lights Night Paddle" and the "City Scenes Waterfront Paddle". Weight limit is 120 kg or less, and paddlers need to fit a seat about 65 cm wide. Beginners are welcome, guests must be able to stay seated up to 45 minutes at a time, and alcohol is not permitted.

Canoe & Kayak Adventures

The minimum age is 13 on "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours" and 11 on the "Coastal Brewery Kayak", or 7 with an adult when conditions permit. Over 120 kg? Tell the operator on the brewery paddle.

Clearyak NZ

The "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes" takes children from age 3, with under-12s in the kayak with an adult. The limit is 100 kg per person, 200 kg per kayak.

Social Nature Movement

Age and weight are not stated on the booking pages for the five tours. Read each booking page before booking.

Social Nature MovementBrowns Island, bioluminescence, Riverhead, Hallertau, Waiheke 2-dayNot stated on the booking pagesNot statedNot stated; the bioluminescence tour is not recommended for travellers with back problems, and participants should have no heart problems or other serious medical conditions

Experience matters more than age on some of these paddles. Every Auckland Sea Kayaks tour states beginners are welcome, no experience needed, in double sea kayaks with guides.

The Tiritiri Matangi Distinction

The guided "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours" trip uses stable double sea kayaks and calls for moderate fitness, per the operator; DOC says independent paddlers need open-water experience. DOC draws a harder line for independent paddlers: the stretch of water between the island and the mainland can get rough and windy, and an independent crossing is an intermediate trip, not for beginners.

Motukorea And First-Time Paddlers

Independent paddlers to Motukorea / Browns Island need solid open-water experience. The operator-guided tours, the "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle" and the "Browns Island Volcano Kayak", are the route for first-timers wanting the island.

Access And Comfort

Auckland Sea Kayaks handles disabilities with tandem arrangements or private tours. Canoe & Kayak Adventures notes kayaking is a wet sport. On the bioluminescence booking page, the tour is not recommended for travellers with back problems or serious medical conditions.

Where A Rule Is Not Stated

Age and weight are not stated on the Social Nature Movement tours, and weight is not stated for the 6 to 7 hour Tiritiri Matangi trip. Where a rule is absent here, read the booking page for that specific tour rather than assuming it matches a similar paddle.

What Is Included On Auckland Kayak Tours, And What To Bring?

A dry bag, steel water bottle, sun hat, sunscreen tube, walking shoes and folded towel laid out on a weathered timber bench.

13 of the 14 tours are guided. The one exception is the "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes", an unguided rental with all equipment provided.

Guides And Gear

Gear details sit on each tour's booking page. The Auckland Sea Kayaks tours list experienced guides and quality sea kayak equipment, except City Scenes, where guide and gear are not stated. The Browns Island, Glow Kayak and Riverhead Tavern tours from Social Nature Movement list a guide, and the Browns Island tour includes kayak, paddle and a personal flotation device. All three Canoe & Kayak Adventures tours include kayaking and safety equipment, with tuition from qualified guides. For Hallertau and Waiheke, a guide is not stated.

Food And Drink

  • "Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto": BBQ dinner and a hot drink, fully catered, with dietary needs on notice
  • "Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto": BBQ lunch, fully catered
  • "Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle": fresh morning tea and refreshments
  • "City Lights Night Paddle": a light snack, snacks included, dinner not included
  • "City Scenes Waterfront Paddle": snacks
  • "2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak": dinner, plus luxury camping accommodation, life jacket, kayak and paddle

Not Included

Lunch and private transportation are not included on "Tiritiri Matangi, 6 to 7 Hours". Gratuities are not included on the "Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak". Meals are not included on the "Coastal Brewery Kayak", and restaurant bookings at Browns Bay Brewing Company are optional. Hotel pickup is not included on any tour.

What to pack depends on the island. DOC advises visitors to Rangitoto to bring their own food and water: there are no shops on the island.

On Rangitoto

Sturdy shoes for the rough volcanic ground, and sun protection, as heat off the lava is intense. There is a total fire ban: no fires or portable barbecues, no camping, and no rubbish bins, so take rubbish out with you.

After Dark And On The Water

Dress for the water temperature rather than the air, as Maritime NZ advises. Since 9 October 2026, Maritime NZ requires everyone on a recreational craft of six metres or less, kayaks included, to wear a properly fitted lifejacket while underway.

Pest-Free Islands

DOC and Auckland Council run a check, clean, close routine for the Hauraki Gulf islands: check gear for rodents and insects, clean footwear and gear of soil and seeds, and close bags, with food in sealed containers. Rangers may recheck gear on arrival.

Goat Island

The marine reserve is New Zealand's first, established in 1975. No fishing of any kind, and do not take, disturb or remove marine life or materials. On the "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes", the booking page notes you may get wet up to the knees.

When To Book Auckland Kayak Tours: Wind, Sea And Daylight

Under heavy cloud, whitecaps cover grey-green Hauraki Gulf water, Rangitoto's hazy cone on the horizon, upturned kayaks strapped to a rack.

Wind decides most of these tours. The operators make the final call on the day, within strict wind and sea limits.

When Conditions Turn

Auckland Sea Kayaks states that if conditions are unsafe it may transfer you to a sheltered tour such as City Lights or City Scenes, reschedule, or give a full refund if no alternative works. The Canoe & Kayak Adventures Tiritiri Matangi tour arranges an alternative paddling location if weather conditions are unsuitable.

Goat Island Limits

DOC does not recommend swimming, snorkelling or diving at the marine reserve in east or north-east winds over 20 knots or swell over a metre, and the reserve has no lifeguards. DOC also notes inexperienced paddlers should take care with sea conditions and currents.

Check The Forecast Yourself

Before you book or drive to a launch point, read the MetService marine forecast for the Hauraki Gulf. Maritime NZ advises paddle-craft users to dress for the water temperature rather than the air, because cold water shock kills, and to practise re-entry into your kayak before you need the skill.

Nothing Here Is Promised

A glow, a landing, a calm crossing: all sit behind the operator's wind and sea limits. Plan for the tour you booked, and let the operator make the water decision on the day.

Small yachts heeling under sail on choppy grey-green water, Rangitoto a low shape, a rack of strapped kayaks in the foreground.

Daylight shapes the sunset paddle. Daylight runs late in midsummer and ends early in midwinter, with daylight saving (NZDT) running from 27 September 2026 to early April 2027.

Booking Windows

Clearyak at Goat Island runs in the warmer season only, peaking December to February, and the operator advises booking 2 to 3 days ahead in those months. Check the operator website before driving up. The public ferry to Tiritiri Matangi books out well ahead November to April. The Tiritiri and brewery tours run on demand with minimum numbers, per Canoe & Kayak Adventures.

Cancellation Terms

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on the booking page of all 14 tours. The five Auckland Sea Kayaks tours carry that 24-hour free cancellation, with the operator's own terms differing: more than 48 hours before departure means a refund less a 25 percent admin fee, and within 48 hours or a no-show means no refund. If the operator cancels for weather, the operator terms say full refund or reschedule.

Read both layers before booking, not after.

Latest Data, November 2026

Dusk silhouettes Rangitoto's symmetrical cone against an orange and violet sky, with shore lights and a lone person on the seawall.

The figures in this section come from the November 2026 booking-page data.

The roster covers 14 tours, 13 of them priced per person. The most-reviewed tour is the "Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours", rated 4.9 across 327 reviews, from $64.03. The average rating is 4.8 across the 8 tours with 5 or more reviews. Five tours are new on the booking platform with no reviews and no rating yet, so they are shown without a rating rather than scored.

Per-Person From-Prices, Lowest To Highest
$62.48lowest$83.80median$1,008.18highest

The per-person from-prices span $62.48 to $1,008.18, with a median of $83.80 across the 13 per-person tours. The lowest per-person price belongs to the "Riverhead Tavern Paddle"; the highest belongs to the two-day "2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak".

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start is stated on all 14 tours. Three tours include a summit walk: the sunset kayak tour to Rangitoto Island, the day sea kayak tour of Rangitoto Island and the Motukorea / Browns Island sea kayak tour.

The Goat Island "Clearyak Rental, 30 or 60 Minutes" is priced per double kayak, up to two people, at $72.13, not per person. Clearyak runs in the warmer season only; check the operator website before you drive up. DOC reported the upper car parks at Goat Island closing for repair, with the main car park and lower overflow staying open.

These figures read the same on every page of this site.

Auckland Kayak Tours FAQ

Early morning: two double kayaks on a wheeled trolley atop a wet slipway, paddles propped against them, dry bags on the ground.
How Long Is A Kayak Tour To Rangitoto?

Both guided Rangitoto tours run 6 hours 30 minutes. The Sunset Paddle to Rangitoto and the Daytime Paddle to Rangitoto each spend part of that time on the water and part on land, with a 7 km return summit walk of about 250 m of climbing and a catered meal on the island. The on-the-water versus on-land breakdown for each tour is shown in the table on this page, so compare before booking.

Do I Need Kayaking Experience?

Most guided tours welcome beginners. The Auckland Sea Kayaks tours state they suit people with little or no kayaking experience, using double sea kayaks with guides, and you must be able to stay seated up to 45 minutes at a time. The Clearyak hire at Goat Island needs no kayaking or swimming experience.

What Is The Minimum Age?

Ages vary by tour. The two Rangitoto paddles require a minimum age of 14. Motukorea, City Lights Night Paddle and City Scenes Waterfront Paddle set it at 12. The Coastal Brewery Kayak sets 11, or 7 with an adult when conditions permit. Tiritiri Matangi is 13. The Clearyak rental at Goat Island allows ages 3 and up, with children under 12 in the kayak with an adult. Other tours state no minimum age.

How Much Do Auckland Kayak Tours Cost?

Per-person from-prices run from $62.48 to $1,008.18 across 13 tours, with a median of $83.80. The two Rangitoto paddles cost from $139.16 per person, the Half-Day Motukorea Volcano Paddle from $110.76, and night paddles from $64.03. The 2-Day Waiheke Island Kayak, which includes camping and dinner, is the dearest at $1,008.18 per person. The Goat Island clear kayak hire is priced per double kayak at $72.13.

Which Tour Is The Cheapest?

The Riverhead Tavern Paddle is the cheapest per person at $62.48. It is a 2-hour guided Social Nature Movement tour starting from Christmas Beach on Herald Island, paddling about an hour on the Waitemata Harbour. It is one of five new tours on the booking platform, so it has no reviews yet. The next cheapest is the Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours at $64.03 per person.

Can I Kayak At Night In Auckland?

Yes. Three night options are compared here. The Glow Waters, 1.5 to 2 Hours runs 1.5 to 2 hours and is the most-reviewed tour on the page, rated 4.9 across 327 reviews. The Est. 1994 Bioluminescence Kayak from Canoe & Kayak Adventures runs 2 hours with a guide-to-guest ratio of 1 to 6. Auckland Sea Kayaks runs the 2.5-hour City Lights Night Paddle from Westhaven Marina.

Will I See Bioluminescence?

No operator guarantees a glow. The operator pages state that bioluminescence is never guaranteed, and Auckland Sea Kayaks says it appears only sometimes between October and April on its sunset tour. The night tours still run as paddles with or without a glow, and operators make the final call on the day within strict wind and sea limits. Book a night tour for the paddle itself, not for a promised light show.

Where Do The Kayak Tours Leave From?

The Rangitoto and Motukorea tours launch from the St Heliers Bay boat ramp at 384 Tamaki Drive. The City Lights and City Scenes paddles leave from Westhaven Marina, Z Pier. The Coastal Brewery Kayak meets at Browns Bay, the Riverhead Tavern Paddle at Christmas Beach on Herald Island, the Tiritiri Matangi trip at Army Bay, Whangaparaoa, and the Waiheke trip at Maraetai. Full details sit in the launch points table.

Is There Hotel Pickup?

No tour includes hotel pickup. Auckland Sea Kayaks runs a pre-booked free shuttle from the Auckland War Memorial Museum atrium on its three St Heliers tours, departing 30 minutes before the tour with limited seats, so reserve it ahead. Its Westhaven tours are excluded, and every other operator's tour meets at the start point. The Canoe & Kayak brewery paddle includes a complimentary shuttle, and the Browns Island and night tours offer an optional paid add-on bus.

What Happens If The Weather Is Bad?

Operators work within strict wind and sea limits and make the final call on the day. Auckland Sea Kayaks may transfer you to a sheltered tour such as City Lights or City Scenes, reschedule, or give a full refund if no alternative works. Clearyak offers a full refund or rebook on weather cancellation. If an operator cancels for weather, the operator terms say a full refund or reschedule applies.

Can I Cancel My Booking?

All 14 booking pages state free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. The five Auckland Sea Kayaks tours carry that 24-hour term on the booking page, with the operator's own terms differing: cancellation more than 48 hours before departure receives a refund less a 25 percent admin fee, and within 48 hours there is no refund. Read both terms before booking those five tours.

What Should I Bring?

Details vary by tour, so check your booking page. Auckland Sea Kayaks asks that you fit a seat about 65 cm wide and weigh 120 kg or less, and alcohol is not permitted on its tours. At Goat Island, Clearyak advises you will get wet to the knees, so bring a towel and a change of shorts, plus warm clothes and a jacket in cool weather. DOC advises sturdy shoes and sun protection on Rangitoto.

Can I Kayak To Tiritiri Matangi?

Yes, on the guided Tiritiri Matangi trip from Canoe & Kayak Adventures, 6 to 7 hours from Army Bay Beach in stable double kayaks, about 8 km to the island. It costs from $150.52 per person, with a minimum age of 13. DOC notes the stretch of water between the island and the mainland can get rough and windy, and calls an independent crossing an intermediate trip, not for beginners. Lunch is not included.

Can I Hire A Clear Kayak At Goat Island?

Clearyak hires double clear-bottom kayaks from Goat Island Road, Leigh, for 30 or 60 minutes at $72.13 per double kayak, up to two people, rated 4.8 across 84 reviews. Clearyak runs in the warmer season only, so check the operator website before you drive up to Goat Island, north of Auckland. Weight limits are 100 kg per person and 200 kg per kayak.

Do I Have To Wear A Lifejacket?

Yes. Since 9 October 2026, Maritime NZ requires everyone on a recreational craft of six metres or less, kayaks included, to wear a properly fitted lifejacket while underway. Most guided tours here list a lifejacket or safety equipment in their inclusions; check the booking page for yours. Clearyak states lifejackets are worn by all. Guided tours supply the equipment, so you do not need to bring your own.
